If you have just graduated from high school, there are a lot of preparations needed to get ready for your first year of college, like buying storage for your dorm room and making sure you have a laptop.

Another way for you to prepare is to make sure your dental health is in order before you leave, especially if you are going to school far away from home.

If they haven’t already had your wisdom teeth removed, the beginning of summer is the perfect time to have that done. Getting your teeth checked earlier means you won’t have to scramble to set up an appointment as the first day of school approaches.

What Happens if You Leave Wisdom Teeth Alone?

Pericoronitis. If left alone, it is possible for your gums to partially cover the emerging wisdom tooth. This makes cleaning difficult, and it can lead to infection.
Impacted Wisdom Tooth. When wisdom teeth are trying to emerge, they sometimes are unable to push through the gums. This can result in impacted wisdom teeth, which can be painful. There is also a possibility for infection or even decay of the impacted tooth.
Dental Cysts. Impacted wisdom teeth can also result in cysts. These cysts start to break down surrounding bone and teeth, causing serious problems if not treated.
Teeth Crowding. If wisdom teeth do not have enough room to erupt, they can push up against your other teeth. This can result in your teeth moving and eventually becoming crowded.

Does Everyone Need Their Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Not everyone needs their wisdom teeth removed. Before deciding, your teeth and jaw will be evaluated to see what treatment is needed.

If you have not had your wisdom teeth removed yet, contact our office to set up an appointment for an evaluation. Summer is the perfect time to figure out what treatment you need so that you can focus on preparing for school as the new school year approaches!
