Wisdom Tooth Removal
What is a wisdom tooth, and why should I have it removed?
Wisdom teeth, also called third molars, are the last teeth to erupt, and most people have four. These large, back teeth develop at a young age as buds beneath the gum surface. As you age, the tooth grows, and it erupts in early adulthood. It is common for wisdom teeth to become impacted and grow toward other teeth. This can lead to pain and infection. Wisdom teeth can also cause crowding and shift teeth out of place. Because they are so far back in the mouth, wisdom teeth are difficult to keep clean. They can become a breeding ground for plaque, bacteria, and cavities. It is best to have wisdom teeth removed early in life. More mature patients are prone to complications.
How is a wisdom tooth removal performed?
In our office, with precision and comfort. The oral surgeons rely on digital X-rays, Panorex images, or cone beam technology to precisely determine a tooth’s anatomy and how it is connected with surrounding tissue. We offer many options for sedation, including nitrous oxide (laughing gas), oral sedation, and general anesthesia. Depending on your case and comfort concerns, the surgeon will recommend appropriate sedation to keep you comfortable in your procedure. The actual removal involves removing the tooth entirely, then closing the gum tissue.
General Tooth Removal Questions
When is it necessary to remove a tooth?
Your general dentist, orthodontist, or oral surgeon may recommend removal to make space for crowded teeth to grow properly, to remove extra teeth that you don’t need (like wisdom teeth), to remove a dead or infected tooth, or to prepare your mouth for dentures.
Should removed teeth be replaced?
If the removed tooth was important to your bite (occlusion) and function, then yes, it should be replaced promptly. The surgeon or your general dentist will advise you as to the best method for replacement. Often, dental implants provide the most lasting and stable prosthetic solution.
