TMJ Dysfunction Therapy

What is temporomandibular joint dysfunction?

The temporomandibular joints are the small joints that hold the jaw to the skull and allow for motion of the mouth. When these joints are misaligned, painful symptoms can develop. This condition is known as TMJ dysfunction, TMJ disorder, or TMD.

What are symptoms of TMJ dysfunction?

Symptoms range from bothersome to debilitating. They include, but are not limited to:

  • Bruxism (Teeth Grinding & Clenching)
  • Earaches
  • Headaches and Migraines
  • Inability to Fully Open and Close the Mouth
  • Malocclusion/ Misaligned Bite
  • Pain in the Jaw, Neck, Face, Head, Low Back
  • Popping or “Stuck” Jaw Joints
  • Sore Jaw and Face Muscles
  • Tingling Fingers
  • Tooth Wear

What options do I have for non-surgical TMJ therapy?

To correct the position of the jaw joints, your dentist may recommend an oral splint, rebuilding back teeth, pain relievers, orthodontics, habit modifications, and/or physical therapy. These conservative treatments solve TMJ dysfunction in a large percentage of patients.

When is TMJ surgery necessary?

When non-surgical therapy proves ineffective, your oral surgeon may recommend arthroscopy, jaw surgery, articular disc repositioning, disc substitution, or joint reconstruction. Dr. Oneacre, Dr. Shillingburg, or Dr. Patterson will work with you to manage pain and reduce or eliminate symptoms. TMD can be difficult to treat because of the many factors involved – muscles, nerves, bones, teeth. One procedure may not address all symptoms. In conjunction with your general dentist, the DFW Oral Surgery team will provide the best possible treatment for your situation.
