What is sedation dentistry?
Sedation dentistry involves administering medication to relax the mind and body, and reduce or eliminate the ability to sense pain, during a procedure.
Who benefits from sedation?
If you feel anxious or stressed about your visit, sedation can allow you a rewarding experience. Patients who do not respond well to traditional local anesthetic, those with a sensitive gag reflex, those who cannot remain comfortable sitting still during procedures, or those who need significant treatment can benefit from sedation.
Can children be sedated?
Yes. We offer sedation that is safe and effective for children. The doctor will consider age, weight, and medical history when recommending a sedation method.
What are my options for sedation?
Sedation is available in various levels, and we will recommend the most effective option for your situation.
- General/IV Sedation – Administered intravenously. Causes a patient to sleep or go into a twilight state.
- Oral Sedation – Administered in pill form. Patient remains conscious and able to respond to directions. May be combined with nitrous oxide.
- Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) – Administered as a gas through a facemask. Causes a dulling of sensations.
