Sinus Lift
Flower Mound, TX

When you are looking to replace long-lost teeth with dental implants, sometimes there are some treatment challenges to overcome in order to give your mouth what it needs to support a new implant. Dental implants are impressive in their ability to give patients the form and function of their natural teeth back. They do have some requirements that must be considered in order for them to be structurally sound in the mouth. One requirement is they need to be able to be placed into the jaw at a certain depth. When the sinus cavity gets in the way of the placement of a dental implant, we may need to do a sinus lift procedure in order to avoid damaging the sinus cavity.

What is a sinus lift?

Sinus lifts may be needed when a dental implant needs to be placed in the upper jaw, as replacements for molars and pre-molars. When the implants required will extend into the sinus cavity, we can modify where the sinus cavity sits to allow the implant to be placed.

The sinuses have a lining known as the sinus membrane. The sinus membrane encircles all of the sinus structures and sit in cavities above where the molars in your mouth are. Sinus lifts allow us to place more bone structure between the ridge of the mouth and the sinus membrane.

How is it accomplished?

In order to prepare for the procedure we obtain bone material either from your own body or from a cadaver. We will have taken extensive X-rays of the area in order to plan and determine the amount of change that must be made. Accurate height and depth measurements will be taken of the sinus cavity as well as the jaw.

We will gain access to the jaw bone by making a few incisions in the gums and fold them back to expose the bone. We will drill through the bone in order to access the nasal cavity. We have the benefit of using extremely precise instruments to ensure great care and accurate drilling depth. Once we can access the sinus membrane we gently move it off of the jaw bone, creating a pocket between the membrane and the bone.

In this pocket we will place granules of bone (the bone graft), being careful to pack them at a planned depth and pattern. Once the graft is in placed we will close the gums over the access point and stitch them closed.

Healing Time is Critical

The site must be allowed to heal for a time. Bone takes a lot longer to manipulate and heal than soft tissue does. Healing time will vary from patient to patient and is highly situational.

During this time, you can expect there to be some minor discomfort and swelling. Remember to take painkillers as directed and prescribed. It is important not to blow your nose or sneeze forcefully. You will leave our office with a full set of care instructions.
